How the game decides
Most pairings are settled by a hidden breeding rank. The game averages both parents' ranks and picks the species sitting closest to that number, which is why two common pals can never produce a rare one. Two exceptions override it:
Pick the pal you want, we’ll find the pairs that make it.
Breeding path finder
Pick the pal you're after and this works backwards to a plan: which pairs to breed, in order, starting from what you already have. You can never breed something rarer than your rarest parent, so the pals you own decide what's reachable at all.
Passive skill inheritance
A child inherits passives from both parents' combined pool, and can roll extra ones at random. Give each parent their passives, pick the ones you're breeding for, and this works out the chance per egg and how many eggs it's likely to take.
84 pals are missing from the pickers. The wiki hasn't published a breeding rank for them yet, and without one there's no way to work out what a pairing would produce, so we leave them out rather than guess.
